The River - Ramsbottom

Commissioned by The Irwell Sculpture Trail

The River is an 88m stainless steel path that follows the course of the River Irwell as it passes through Ramsbottom. The concept for the artwork evolved through research and talking to people from the local heritage group. It soon became apparent that the river had played a prominent role in the areas existence. We wanted to create a piece that encouraged people to appreciate the river and our dependence on it. Poems, written by 2 local children, are etched onto its surface.

The artwork weaves its way through the picnic site and culminates in a series of stepping-stones that act as a viewing platform for the steam trains that pass alongside the site.

Created as the culmination of a 6 month residency in Ramsbottom by Hetty Chapman and Karen Allerton
